If the primary concern is dental crowding, a traditional Hyrax Palatal Expander is usually sufficient

MARPE (Mini-screw Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion) and MSE (Maxillary Skeletal Expander) are advanced orthodontic systems that use small, temporary mini-implants anchored to the palate to support skeletal expansion of the upper jaw. Unlike traditional expanders that rely mainly on teeth, these appliances work directly with the bone.

In carefully selected patients, MARPE and MSE can gently and predictably separate the mid-palatal suture, allowing the upper jaw to widen—even in adolescents and adults whose growth has already completed.

What Can MARPE and MSE Help With?

MARPE and MSE offer benefits that go beyond straight teeth:

  • Create a fuller, wider smile (no more narrow smile)

  • Make room for crowded teeth, often reducing the need for extractions

  • Improve facial balance and smile aesthetics

  • Increase space in the nasal cavity, which may support nasal breathing

  • In some patients, help reduce mouth breathing or snoring related to airway constriction

By expanding the upper jaw and nasal cavity, some patients notice easier breathing during sleep, less nasal congestion, and improved overall comfort. Results vary from person to person, which is why a comprehensive evaluation is essential to determine whether this approach is appropriate.
