Airway-focused orthodontics in adults is not about recreating childhood growth — it’s about working with existing anatomy thoughtfully and realistically.

Many adults wonder whether palatal expansion is only possible during childhood. While facial growth changes with age, palatal expansion may still be appropriate for some adults when treatment is carefully evaluated and planned.

What makes adult palatal expansion different

  • Adult treatment does not rely on growth

  • Decisions are based on existing anatomy, not age alone

  • Evaluation includes a clinical exam and CBCT imaging

  • Arch form, jaw relationships, and airway space are carefully reviewed

How the right expander is selected

  • Some adults may be candidates for skeletal-based expanders, such as MARPE or MSE

  • Others may benefit from alternative orthodontic approaches

  • The choice depends on bone structure, dental support, and overall health factors

Am I a Candidate for MARPE or MSE?

An adult airway orthodontic evaluation may be worth considering if you recognize one or more of the following:

  • A history of orthodontic relapse or shifting teeth after previous treatment

  • Narrow or V-shaped dental arches

  • Chronic mouth breathing, especially during sleep

  • Snoring or ongoing sleep concerns

  • Jaw tension, clenching, or discomfort

For many adults, thoughtful orthodontic care can help create a more comfortable foundation for oral function and long-term dental health.
